The poster features subtle references to the revolutionary work of artist Marcel Duchamp and industrial designer Philippe Starck, and targets new generation designers. Themed around the phrase, “In craziness lies genius,” Nieh encourages entrants to pursue original ideas that will influence the future direction of design. The off-center die-cut shape of the poster also reflects this idea.

Also hidden away in the design is a carefully crafted word-play that can only be understood if the Chinese characters are spoken aloud in Taiwanese, a branch of Hokkien spoken only in Taiwan. When spoken aloud in Taiwanese, the Chinese characters 未來你來未 (wèi lái nǐ lái wèi), which are arranged geometrically on the page, mean “Are you ready for the future?”

“The perspective of a ‘crazy’ designer is unusual. For example, they see lines, dot, and space in a unique way. I hope that the people who see this poster will be driven to reflect on their own vision and challenge themselves to strive for something different,” explains Aaron Nieh, the Taiwanese designer behind the Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2017 call for entries poster.
